The King's Blockhouse, an 18th-century fort in Cape Town | Table Mountain

The King's Blockhouse was built in 1796 during a restructuring of the Cape Town defenses by Major General James Craig.



He had previously confiscated Dutch colonists' land and used it to build fortifications after their departure from the area in 1795.

The construction of the Kings Blockhouse on Table Mountain was a significant feat.

Though they had help from African slaves, the British chose to build these early Cape Town blockhouses in a distinctively medieval style – architectural affirmation of their presence at southern tip of Africa.


The blockhouses served as watch towers and look out posts for any attackers or enemies of the British at that time.


Why was it called the Kings Blockhouse?

The King blockhouse was named in honor of the reigning British monarch at the time (King George III
